Cantilever House

Levenshulme

Serving as an addition to a stunning Victorian semi-detched family home, Cantilever House creates space for modern family life that blurs the boundaries between the interior and exterior of the property. Gannon works selected a tactile material palette of natural clay render, standing seam zinc and clay quarry tiles, all reflective of the colour and tonal properties inherent within the existing brickwork.

The extension comes up to meet the raised ground floor level of the existing property, allowing for the kitchen to be repositioned to the rear of the house and opened up to the dining room and snug within the extension. The new spaces sit below a roof of exposed douglas fir beams that extends out and cantilevers over the raised terrace by 1.5m. The new canopy offers shading to the south facing glazing of the extension whilst providing covered seating to the fixed benches that are integrated into the terrace. The edges of the terrace are softened by the planters which further blur the threshold between the house and garden by bringing greenery right up to the generously proportioned new glazing.
